First Woman Mayor of Glossop and Freeman of Glossop

Blue plaque for Mary Alice Partington

The fifth Blue Plaque by Glossop Heritage Trust was to Mary Alice Partington for her contribution to the civic life of the town. She became Mayor after the unexpected death of her husband, Herbert Partington, in 1916. She was the first woman Mayor of Glossop, and as far as we are aware only the third woman Mayor in England.

The plaque was unveiled by the Mayor of High Peak, Councillor Edward Kelly. High Peak MP Ruth George, the first woman to be elected MP for High Peak, gave a talk about the role of women in politics. Representatives of the present generation of the Partington Family also attended on the day.
