GHT NEWS
NEW SERIES COMING THIS AUTUMN…
GLOSSOP’S GOVERNANCE
In the biggest change in its local governance arrangements for 54 years, in April 2028 Glossop and district will go into a single new council covering the whole of North Derbyshire.
The way it has been governed has, however, changed many times over the centuries. Later this year Glossop Heritage Trust will chart that history in a Facebook series, from the origins under the Anglo-Saxons, through long periods of monastic then aristocratic control, to the belated acquisition by Glossop of borough status in 1866 and the debates in the 1960s and early 70s about whether it should stay in Derbyshire or join Greater Manchester.
Each part will be added to the website after publication on Facebook.

You will find the Chair’s Report 2024-2025 from our AGM in our About GHT section.

New Donation
In 2023 an original etched copper plate of Holly Mount and Isaac Jackson’s Factory on Norfolk Street and Ellison Street was donated to the Trust. We commissioned Lauren Riley to hand print 30 prints from the copper plate using traditional techniques. These prints have been produced as a numbered limited edition.
The prints are A4 size and are on sale for £75.00 each. Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing a limited edition print.

Blue Plaque Unveiling
Saturday 12 July 2025
Glossop Heritage Trust’s next Blue Plaque commemorates the achievements of Glossop North End football club during its time in the First and Second Division of the football league.
Provided with the financial support of a local mill owner, Sir Samuel Hill-Wood, the club played alongside teams like Manchester City for one season in the First Division before playing Second Division football until the First World War. Glossop remains to this day the smallest town to have played at the top level of English football. The plaque records the achievement of the club and their benefactor.
The blue plaque will be unveiled at Glossop North End’s Asgard Stadium, Surrey Street, Glossop, SK13 8GG (vehicular access from Glossop Brook Road) on Saturday 12th July 2025. Gates will open at 10am and the unveiling ceremony will start at 10.30am. The event closes at 11.30am. The event is free and all are welcome.

New Series
Glossop’s Domesday Villages
Each week a new part will be released. Part 1 was released on 3rd December 2023, but you can catch up here.
There were people here in the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, but there are now few traces of them. Then the Romans marched in, but left little to see apart from Melandra. Then, about 1400 years ago, the Anglo-Saxons arrived – and the evidence is all around us…
