Built in 1851 by William Prince who was listed as a beerhouse keeper in an 1852 Whelan’s Directory.
When the Borough Registers commenced Jonathan Earnshaw was the licensee and the owners were the Rose of Sharon Lodge of the New Mills Independent Order of Oddfellows. Two years later Earnshaw bought the pub and remained licensee until 1891 when he died with his widow Sarah taking over.
In 1896 it was bought by Openshaw Brewery for £3600 (a lot of money in those days for a pub). The licensee from 1900 to 1906 was my wife’s grandfather Thomas Edward Bradbury. A Full Licence was obtained in 1960, as with other Openshaw pubs ownership eventually passed to Bass who sold the pub in March 1992 to the Centric Pub Company of Nottingham. They were taken over by Gibbs Mew of Salisbury in 1994 who were taken over recently by Enterprise Inns Ltd. of Solihull. Refurbishment took place in 1995 and the pub reopened in December.
Post 1999 – The pub had closed by 2002 and was converted into a private residence.
