The pub was built by John Shaw in 1837 and he was granted an alehouse licence the same year, at this time the pub was called the Commercial and also had a stable, brewhouse and carriage house. Two years later Ann Eliza Hadfield look over but in 1842 John Shaw returned as licensee, in the 1851 Census he was described as an innkeeper aged 42 with a wife Mary aged 60. He died in 1872 and later that year his executor Charles Leech of Cowbrook sold the pub to William Shaw a brewer of Park Road Dukinfield. After William Shaw’s death in 1889 ownership passed to his son Henry Shaw. Fred Slater was the pubs longest serving landlord from 1912 to 1954 during which time in 1941 Henry Shaw’s were taken over by John Smith’s Tadcaster Brewery now part of the Courage Group. They remained owners until 1992 when along with the Anchor the pub was sold to Vaux Breweries of Sunderland who along with the then licensee renamed it the Whiteley Nab.
Post 1999 – The pub closed around 2008 and was turned into a restaurant.
