Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society
There were many friendly societies in Glossop in the 19th century. These provided relief to families if a breadwinner fell ill or died, in the absence of a welfare state. Members paid a few pence a week into a common fund from which sick pay and funeral grants could be drawn.
The Ancient Order of Foresters began in 1834 and still exists today as The Foresters Friendly Society. The Order consisted of Courts, which were responsible for their own funds and for relief of their own members. The Courts were parts of bigger Districts. Every year each Court sent a delegate to the High Court where common rules were decided. One of the Courts met at Rose Green Working Men’s Club
