Lord Howard gave the land around Harehills to the Borough Council as a War Memorial. This was in honour of his son, Philip Fitzalan Howard, and the Glossop men who had lost their lives. The development of this area into Sandholes and Philip Howard Road is detailed in The Sandhole Story.
