Built in 1850 by Joseph Elliot a cotton warp dresser. The first mention of a pub is in 1866 when William Turner a veterinary surgeon, previously at the Albion, placed an advert in the Glossop Record to the effect that he “begs leave to inform his friends and the public that he has opened the Victoria Vaults with a choice selection of clear sparkling ales, porter, cordials etc”. He was followed in 1873 by George Harrop whose trade was a wheelwright. He remained until 1887 when my wife’s great grandfather Charles Percy Newton became licensee, he remained until 1899 during which time in 1895 Boddington’s Brewery had become owners.
A Wine Licence was added in 1959 and a Spirits Licence in 1962 to give it a Full Licence. In 1968 Raymond Stafford became licensee and seven years later over £21000 was spent on improvements to make it a very cosy pub with a regular clientele.
In 1992 it was bought by the licensee and on 29th May an anniversary party was held. As part of the celebrations the pub was renamed “The Sparrows” a name used for many years. This acknowledged the 21 years it was kept by Arthur Sparrow and his wife Alice between 1915 and 1936. According to the local paper it has been bought by Enterprise Inns of Solihull.
Post 1999 – The Sparrows was sold and became Flanagan’s. This closed around 2011 and the property was converted into a private residence.
