Built in 1846 by James Robinson and probably named like the other Surrey after the Earl of Surrey, James was already a beerseller when he unsuccessfully applied for an alehouse licence in 1848. In the 1851 Census he was described as aged 62, a widower, beerseller and farmer of 11 acres of land with one son James and employed one servant and one labourer. By 1860 Samuel Sidebottom was the licensee, in 1866 he hosted a New Years Day dinner for the Managers and Overlookers Friendly Society.
The owner at this time was shown as Cephas Ernhill of Wren Nest. In 1881 Smith & Nephew, brewers of Retford became owners, they were shortly after taken over by the Worksop & Retford Brewery Company Ltd. who remained owners until 1891 when they sold the pub to Boddington’s Brewery. Along with other Boddington Pub Company pubs in November 1995 it became a Greenall’s house.
Post 1999 – The Surrey Arms is still open.
