A copy of the photograph below was published in the Glossop Chronicle of 13th February 1953, under the heading “This picture was taken 50 years ago”, with the letter which follows:
Sir, I have been interested reading in your paper – which I receive each week – remarks referring to the electric trams of Glossop of the years past. I enclose a photograph which I think will interest your readers, particularly the older generation.
This photograph was taken on the opening day of the tramway service 50 years ago. The tram was specially engaged by Mr. Squire Sellers – brother of Alderman Richard Sellers – who was the proprietor of the large drapery establishment in High Street East. Standing on the pavement are Mr. Sellers, Mr H Crossley, their first salesman, and the chief inspector of the tramways.
On the top are Miss Goddard, Miss Sellers, Miss Widdup and Miss Willis (department heads), and Mr J. Sidebottom (clerk), later School Board Officer. At the tram controls is an inspector, and Mr. J. W. Phair (driver) is standing by. The policeman is P.C. White.
The writer served his apprenticeship with Mr. Squire Sellers, but was at that date employed in Manchester. With all respect to the Glossop of today may I venture to say “Those were the days”.
